Your sun sign is probably not the one you were told

Vedic astrology reads the zodiac against the stars. Western astrology reads it against the seasons. The two have drifted about 24° apart over two thousand years, so if you learned your sign from an English-language horoscope or a Western astrology app, this system gives you the one before it. Neither is wrong — they are measured from different places.

Find yours from your birth date

No time or place needed, and nothing is stored. Computed for your birth year — the boundary moves by up to eighteen hours across the leap cycle, so no single fixed table is right for every year, and almost every other sun-sign tool uses one.

All twelve

The signs, and when the Sun is in each

Dates for 2026, in Indian Standard Time, root-found rather than tabulated — the Sun's speed varies by about 3% across the year, so the signs are not equal lengths in days. A sankranti is an instant, not a date. It falls up to eighteen hours either side depending on where the year sits in the leap cycle, and drifts about two thirds of a day later each century — so these dates are for this year, and a birth within a day of one needs the exact time to be placed.

Worth saying plainly

What a sun sign cannot tell you

  • It is one of nine. The Sun is a single graha. The Moon, the rising sign and seven others are all placed somewhere, and a reading that uses one of nine is using about a ninth of what there is.
  • About one person in twelve shares it. Roughly eight in every hundred people alive have the Sun where you do. Anything true of all of them is not a description of you.
  • The rising sign changes every two hours, and most of a chart hangs on it. Two people born on the same day in the same city, four hours apart, share a sun sign and almost nothing else — different houses, different lords, different periods running now.
  • No date is readable from it. Periods, transits and returns are computed from the Moon and the exact birth moment. A sun sign carries no timing at all, and anything dated that you have been told it carries was invented.

Which is the argument for the rest of this site rather than against this page.

The rest of it

A sun sign is one of nine placements. Your rising sign, your Moon, the period running over you now and the patterns the texts name are all computable, and all of them need your birth time.

Questions people ask

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western one?

Because the two zodiacs are measured against different things. Vedic astrology reads the zodiac against the fixed stars, Western astrology reads it against the seasons, and the two have drifted about twenty-four degrees apart over two thousand years. That is nearly a whole sign, which is why so many people find they are one sign earlier here.

Which of the two is correct?

Neither is an error in the other's terms. They answer different questions: one locates the Sun against the constellations, the other against the equinox. What would be wrong is reading a sidereal sign with meanings written for a tropical one, or the reverse, and that happens constantly.

What is the ayanamsa?

It is the offset between the two zodiacs, and it grows by roughly fifty arcseconds a year. Several values are in use and they disagree slightly. This site uses Lahiri, which is the Indian government standard and by far the most widely used, and every chart records the exact value it was computed with.

I was born on the boundary between two signs. Which one am I?

Whichever one the Sun was actually in at your birth, which depends on the year and, close to the edge, on the time of day. The dates on this page are computed for the year you were born rather than taken from a fixed table, and a birth close enough to a boundary for the time to matter is flagged as such instead of being resolved silently.

How much can a sun sign actually tell you?

Less than it is usually asked to. The Sun is one of nine grahas, and the Moon, the rising sign and seven others are all placed somewhere too. A reading built on the Sun alone is using about a ninth of what the system has, which is why sun-sign horoscopes feel like they could be about anyone.
