The part that surprises people
If you have been calling yourself Taurus
Born in this window, an English-language horoscope or a Western astrology app would almost always call you Taurus. Both are right: they are measured from different places.
The reason is precession. The tropical zodiac was named when the spring equinox sat at the start of Aries; it has since moved about 24° against the stars, and Western astrology kept measuring from the equinox while Vedic astrology kept measuring from the stars. Neither drifted by mistake — they are two coordinate systems, and the gap between them is a number you can look up rather than a disagreement about the sky.
Which also means the name Aries points at different dates in the two systems. A Western Aries, born about three weeks before this window opens, is usually Meena here.
A sankranti is an instant, not a date. It falls up to eighteen hours either side depending on where the year sits in the leap cycle, and drifts about two thirds of a day later each century — so these dates are for this year, and a birth within a day of one needs the exact time to be placed.
What the texts say about the sign
Mesha in the classical scheme
The first sign: movable, fiery, and ruled by Mars. The Sun is exalted here.
Beginnings rather than continuations. A movable sign is read for starting and for moving, and a fiery one for acting before deliberating rather than after. Mars ruling it is why the texts attach initiative and contest to this arc, and why they also attach haste.
In the Kalapurusha scheme, where the zodiac is laid over a single figure, Mesha is the head.
Every sentence above describes the sign, not you. That is not a hedge, it is the difference between a claim you can check against a classical text and a claim about a person made from one of nine placements.
Worth saying plainly
What a sun sign cannot tell you
- It is one of nine. The Sun is a single graha. The Moon, the rising sign and seven others are all placed somewhere, and a reading that uses one of nine is using about a ninth of what there is.
- About one person in twelve shares it. Roughly eight in every hundred people alive have the Sun where you do. Anything true of all of them is not a description of you.
- The rising sign changes every two hours, and most of a chart hangs on it. Two people born on the same day in the same city, four hours apart, share a sun sign and almost nothing else — different houses, different lords, different periods running now.
- No date is readable from it. Periods, transits and returns are computed from the Moon and the exact birth moment. A sun sign carries no timing at all, and anything dated that you have been told it carries was invented.
Which is the argument for the rest of this site rather than against this page. Your Mesha is true. It is also the smallest fact in your chart.
Your chart, not your sign
If this window is yours, that is one of nine placements settled. Your rising sign, your Moon, the period running over you now and the patterns the texts name need your birth time, and they are what the rest of this site computes.
