When do the classical rules leave a window open?

Pew put it at 83% of Indians fixing important dates by auspicious timing — nearly double the 44% who say they believe in astrology. This is that question, answered the way the texts answer it: a list of named rules, not a score.

Six weeks at a time, because muhurta is restrictive by construction and a fortnight often has nothing open. The windows are local to the place you name, since every one of them is measured from its sunrise.

19 open days in the next 45

With no particular undertaking named, only the exclusions apply: the fierce and sharp nakshatras, the empty tithis, Bhadra, the three avoided yogas and the three daily windows.

How this was worked out. Windows the classical rules leave open, not a score. Each one is a span the tradition names as favourable, with the three avoided daily windows cut out of it, on a day no day-level rule excludes. Nothing here is weighted or ranked.

A general muhurta is weaker than one chosen for a named act.

Worth saying plainly

What this does not do

  • It does not score a day. There is no percentage, no star rating and no “best time”. The classical literature gives factors and no weighting of them; any weighting is somebody’s opinion dressed as arithmetic. Every window here says which rule named it, and every excluded day says which rule excluded it.
  • Not covered. Marriage. It needs both charts, the Ashtakoot reading and Mangal dosha on each side before a date means anything, and half of a marriage muhurta is worse than none.
  • Not covered. Anything medical, legal or financial. A date is not a second opinion.
  • Not covered. Your own chart. Classical practice checks a muhurta against the birth Moon as well as against the day, and that needs a birth time.

Against your own chart

Classical practice checks a muhurta against the birth Moon as well as against the day. That needs your birth time, and it is what the rest of this site computes.
