When marriages are not held
Each of these closes every day it touches. A day its start or end falls in is closed whole.

- The Sun is in Karka, Simha and Kanya 16 Jul, 12:06 to 17 Oct, 08:16
- Jupiter is set (Guru Tara Asta) 16 Sept, 18:57 to 13 Oct, 05:38

After the date: the couple
These dates pass Panchang Shuddhi, the test of the sky, which is the same for every couple in the city. The other half belongs to the couple: matching their kundlis (the 36-point Guna Milan and Mangal dosha), and a pandit choosing the lagna for the hour of the ceremony (Lagna Shuddhi).
How the dates are chosen
A day is closed while Venus or Jupiter is set (asta) and for three days either side; while the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena (Kharmas) or in Karka, Simha or Kanya; in an adhika month; and in Chaturmas, from Devshayani to Devutthana Ekadashi. Venus and Jupiter count as set while they rise or set too close to the Sun to be seen from the city.
On an open day the hours are those in one of the eleven marriage nakshatras (Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati, less the gandanta quarter of Magha, Mula and Revati), outside the nine inauspicious yogas, and outside Bhadra and the four fixed karanas. Stretches under five minutes are left out. A panchang day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, so hours after midnight are listed under the day before, with their own date.
Checked against DrikPanchang for New Delhi on every day of 2026 and 2027, and against its Venus and Jupiter asta times for 2023 to 2027. On seven days in those two years we differ on purpose: DrikPanchang checks only the first two nakshatras and yogas of a day, and we check every one, so a window it lets run into Vishkambha or Ganda yoga stops here.
Questions people ask
How many vivah muhurat are there in 2028?
79 days in 2028 pass Panchang Shuddhi for Delhi, the first on Saturday, 15 January 2028 and the last on Thursday, 14 December 2028. Each is listed above with the hours it allows.
Why are there no marriage dates in Kharmas and Chaturmas?
The muhurta texts close the months the Sun spends in Dhanu and Meena (Kharmas), and the four months from Devshayani Ekadashi to Devutthana Ekadashi (Chaturmas). The marriage season reopens after Devutthana Ekadashi.
What is Shukra asta, and why does it stop weddings?
Venus (Shukra) is asta, or set, while it is too close to the Sun to be seen. Muhurta Chintamani and Dharmasindhu forbid a marriage then, and for the three days before it sets and after it rises; the same holds for Jupiter (Guru). Venus is set: 29 May to 6 June.
Is a date from this list enough to fix a wedding?
It is the first step. The list is Panchang Shuddhi, and it is the same for everyone in Delhi. Families also match the couple’s kundlis and have a pandit choose the lagna for the hour of the ceremony.
