Moon sign and nakshatra
हिन्दी में पढ़ेंWhere was the Moon when you were born?
Your Chandra rashi is the sign most Indian astrology means when it asks for yours — dashas, Sade Sati and matching all count from it, not from your Sun. It needs a birth time more often than anyone admits, and this page says when.
Worth saying plainly
Why a date is often not enough
- The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day. It crosses a 30-degree sign in roughly 2.3 days, so a sign boundary falls inside about two days in every five. On those days a birth at 06:00 and a birth at 20:00 have different Moon signs.
- A nakshatra is 13°20', which the Moon crosses in slightly under a day. So the date settles your janma nakshatra less often than not — a tool that prints one from a date alone is wrong more often than it is right.
- The transition times here are root-found, not interpolated. The Moon’s speed varies by about 12% between perigee and apogee, so guessing between two samples puts a boundary minutes out — on exactly the births where minutes decide.
- Sade Sati is a transit, not a sentence. Everyone alive gets it about three times, and roughly one person in four is inside it at any moment. It is reported here because it is arithmetic on two signs, and described rather than scored.
Questions people ask
What is a moon sign, and how is it different from a sun sign?
Your moon sign, or Chandra rashi, is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth. It is the one most Indian astrology means when it asks for your sign: dashas, Sade Sati and Ashtakoot matching are all counted from the Moon, not from the Sun. The sun sign is what English-language horoscopes use.
Why does a moon sign need a birth time?
The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so it crosses into a new sign roughly every two and a quarter days. If that crossing happened on the day you were born, the date alone cannot settle which side of it you fall on. This page says so when it happens and shows both candidates with the time of the change, rather than picking one and sounding certain.
What is a nakshatra, and why does it matter more than the sign?
The nakshatras divide the same circle into twenty-seven parts instead of twelve, so each is finer than a sign. The one the Moon occupied at birth is what the Vimshottari dasha is calculated from, which makes it load-bearing in a way the moon sign on its own is not.
Is Sade Sati seven and a half bad years?
It is the period while Saturn transits the twelfth, first and second signs from your natal Moon, which takes about seven and a half years. Whether it is bad is a claim, not a calculation, and the classical literature itself is not unanimous. This page tells you whether it is running and which phase you are in, and does not score it.
Why is my moon sign different on another website?
Almost always because the other site is using the tropical zodiac rather than the sidereal one. The two have drifted roughly twenty-four degrees apart, which is enough to move the Moon a whole sign. Neither is a mistake; they are measuring against different reference points, and this page uses the sidereal one Indian astrology is built on.
